I have yet to find a better way to move large amounts of data physically (I keep one in a safe deposit box). No power supply needed except for the USB connection. I use one of these daily for Time Machine backups on OS X, and I keep a clone of my laptop's drive on a second WD Passport drive, stored offsite in case of a fire or theft. They've performed perfectly, if a little slowly. My one gripe about these things: the LED status light is easily as bright as a pocket flashlight. In a darkened room, it's totally obnoxious. I don't know why electronics manufacturers think it's necessary to use the brightest LED available for a little indicator ...more

Make sure you look over the directions and properly eject the hardware.. Try not to shake it when or when not in use. This probably wasn't the problem for the techies but maybe for the less knowledgeable. I unplug the HD from my laptop all the time and haven't had a problem getting it to turn on again. I even travel with it frequently. I still keep my faith in WD products, so hopefully still works in a few months LOL. ...more

After I purchased Western Digital's My Book Studio Edition (500GB) external hard drive, I went to check whether it had actually backed up my data using Apple's Time Machine. When I tried to open any application from the external hard drive I got error code -10657. I called Western Digital and they said it was probably saving your data. It is a 5400 RPM drive, which is the same speed as the base 60 GB drive was. The overall replacement was easy enough, although I did run into issues with the screws holding the 60 GB drive onto the holder. Nothing that couldn't be overcome with a handy dremel tool. I however upgraded my 40GB PS3 to a 500GB drive(You only see about 465GB once its formatted). From the 80Gb to the 160GB version there is a $100 difference. INSTEAD get the 80GB and a 500GB drive for about $120 and get 3 times the capacity of the 160GB. For several years now we have been using this kind of paper (any brand will do) to create animation drawings. For a pegbar, I use a modified wood ruler for 3-ring binders with short 5/8" dowel pieces glued into the 3 holes.
