It kind of scared me, but fortunately it only happened the first time I used it. Maybe just the break in odor or something. Other than the first time odor it works fairly well, I have not tried the car adapter plug yet. But it does seem handy to have. I have been using 2 of these batteries (not purchased through Amazon) for about 2 years now, right next to my Canon batteries, and have had absolutely no problems. I use a battery grip on my cameras (I have the Canon Digital Rebel and the 5D) so that I can a)use 2 batteries and b)gives the cameras more 'heft' - balance.
